Clark Kent Costumes: Superman's Secret Identitity - Halloween Costume Ideas
The best Superman costume ideas on the Internet.
Clark Kent Costume Ideas
Clark
Cent costumes may not be as popular as Superman costumes, but one good
idea is to include both in this year's Halloween costume ideas. There
are two different ways you can pull this off. One is to show up at your
Halloween Party as Clark Kent, complete with his journalist's briefcase
for his job at the Daily Planet. Inside the briefcase, stash your
Superman costume. Halfway through the party, make the change and reveal
the other half of your costume. (Make the change before prizes are given
out.)
The other option is to buy a reversible Clark Kent/Superman Halloween outfit, which I've found online. This lets you pull the same trick without having to carry a briefcase around all night. Either is perfectly in keeping with the Superman-Clark Kent motif.
Who Is Clark Kent?
Clark Kent is the alter ego of Superman, the Last Son of Krypton. When Kryptonian scientist, Jor-El, learns that his planet is doomed (either from explosion of the planet's core, or a coming supernova) and his civilization's Science Council refuses to listen to his warnings, Jor-El builds a tiny rocketship, large enough only for his infant son, and sends him to Earth. Once under Earth's yellow sun, Kryptonians have power far beyond mortal kin. This orphan child of dead Krypton, Kal-El, is adopted by a childless pair of farmers, John and Martha Kent.
Growing up with human parents, young Clark learns what it means to be human, while coping with the powers of a demigod. Even when he eventually assumes the title of "Superman" (usually given to him by the papers), the alien hero chooses to spend most of his time as Clark Kent. This secret identity lets him identify with the human race, make normal friends instead of fawning admirers, and live out a "normal life" as a mild-mannered reporter. In love with a fellow reporter at the Daily Globe, plucky Lois Lane, this creates a strange love triangle where Lois (usually) has mixed feelings for both Superman and his alter ego, Clark Kent.
Clark Kent Reversible Costume - Superman Outfit
So that's the background. Let's look at a few Clark Kent costume ideas and suggestions. One of them is the aforementioned Clark Kent-Superman Reversible Costume, which gives you the best of both worlds. You can even do like the model in the picture, pulling back your suit top to reveal the Superman symbol underneath.
Clark Kent Glasses
If you're putting together your own Clark Kent outfit to match a Superman costume, all you might need (besides a good suit) is a pair of Clark Kent horn-rimmed glasses. These spectacles do the trick nicely and cost you only $3 plus shipping.
Superman Vinyl Wig
One problem with a dual Superman-Clark Kent costume is getting hair right. Superman has the prominent spit curl in the front of his hair, while Clark Kent tend to slick back all of his hair (and, in the old days, often kept it under a fedora hat). This and the glasses are supposed to explain how nobody recognizes Clark Kent as Superman.
It's not so tidy in real life as it is in the comic books, so if you wear your hair slicked back with gel, or under a hat, that spit curl might be hard to get right halfway through the party. So another option is to buy a Superman vinyl wig. This is a child picture, but you can find the right size if you search for Superman wigs long enough.
Superman Costumes
To get the Superman and Clark Kent costume right, you just need to pay attention to certain key details. You're going to focus on the Clark Kent suit and the Superman blue-and-red underwear, but the costume is going to succeed based on whether you have a good cape, a replica yellow belt, a good wig, and a good pair of glasses. Get the details right and your Clark Kent costume will be brilliant.
